CSS (Central Superior Services) is Pakistan's premier civil service examination, conducted annually by the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC). Candidates who qualify are inducted into federal occupational groups such as the Pakistan Administrative Service (PAS), Foreign Service of Pakistan (FSP), Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), Inland Revenue Service, Customs, and several others, based on merit and preference.

Eligibility Criteria
Please note: The framework below reflects CSS's long-standing eligibility structure. Exact age-relaxation categories and cut-off dates are set fresh in each year's FPSC advertisement, so always confirm the current year's figures directly on the
official FPSC website before relying on them.
AgeGenerally 21 to 30 years as of the cut-off date fixed in that year's advertisement. Relaxations exist for specific categories (for example government servants and candidates from certain regions), but the exact relaxation years and eligible categories are notified separately each year by FPSC -- do not assume a figure without checking the current advertisement. EducationA Bachelor's degree (at least second division, or equivalent CGPA) from an HEC-recognized university, representing a minimum of 14 years of education. Foreign degrees require HEC equivalence. AttemptsA maximum of three attempts at the CSS written examination over a candidate's lifetime. Appearing in even one paper of the written exam counts as an attempt; applying without appearing does not. Nationality & DomicilePakistani nationality and a valid domicile certificate are required; domicile determines a candidate's provincial/regional quota. Exam Structure

QualifyingMCQ-based Preliminary/Screening Test (MPT)A qualifying MCQ screening test that candidates must clear to become eligible to sit the written examination. Candidates choose optional subjects from FPSC's notified subject groups to make up the remaining 600 marks. Group composition, subject list and marks-per-subject are set out in FPSC's official CSS syllabus, which is revised from time to time -- always check the
current official syllabus on fpsc.gov.pk before finalising your optional subject choices, rather than relying on any third-party list, including this one.

Successful CSS preparation is typically built around: reading newspapers and credible current affairs sources daily rather than cramming before the exam; building a genuine argument-and-evidence base for the essay paper instead of memorising pre-written essays; practising precis and composition regularly, since it is a skill built over months, not days; choosing optional subjects based on genuine interest and scoring history rather than only "popular choice" advice; and revising Pakistan Affairs and Islamic Studies alongside current developments so static content stays connected to what is actually happening. Past papers (available on the FPSC website) are one of the most reliable ways to understand examiner expectations for each paper.
