PTE Academic explained from Pearson's published information, with MOCC's IELTS & PTE batch details and practical preparation guidance.

PTE Academic is a computer-based English-proficiency test used for study and migration applications. This page explains the current test format and scoring as published by Pearson, what changed in August 2025, how to organise your preparation, and what MOCC's IELTS & PTE batch includes. Candidates who are also preparing for CSS, PMS or PPSC can use it alongside MOCC's IELTS preparation, TOEFL preparation and Duolingo English Test preparation pages.

Please note: MOCC Academy is an independent test-preparation platform. We are not a Pearson test centre and are not affiliated with, accredited by, or endorsed by Pearson. PTE Academic registration and the official test are booked directly through Pearson. MOCC does not guarantee any PTE score, admission or visa outcome.

PTE Academic Scoring

Pearson reports PTE Academic results on a 10–90 scale: an overall score together with Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening scores. Pearson states that AI scores every response first and that human double marking applies to content scoring on seven question types (Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Written Text, Write Essay, Summarize Spoken Text, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation). Each institution sets its own required scores, so always check the requirement of the university or authority you are applying to.

What Changed in August 2025

Pearson announced that PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI tests taken after 7 August 2025 include two new Speaking tasks: Summarize Group Discussion, where you listen to a discussion between three people and summarise it, and Respond to a Situation, where you read and hear a short everyday scenario and give a spoken answer. Pearson states that the test remains about two hours long and that its original question types remain. If you are using older practice material, check whether it includes these two tasks.

How to Prepare: MOCC's Suggested Approach

The steps below are MOCC's own preparation guidance, not official Pearson advice.

1
Learn the question types

Study each task's instructions and timing from Pearson's format pages so nothing is unfamiliar on test day.

2
Practise by skill

Record yourself on Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence and Describe Image; practise short written summaries and essays within the stated time limits.

3
Build grammar and vocabulary

Accurate grammar and a wider vocabulary range support every part, especially the written and spoken tasks.

4
Take timed practice tests

Review each attempt, note your weakest question types and revise those first. Pearson also offers scored practice tests on its own website.
