TOEFL iBT Format and Scoring (Updated January 2026)

ETS introduced an updated TOEFL iBT on 21 January 2026. The test is adaptive and still takes about two hours. Each of the four sections and the overall score are now reported on a 1–6 scale in half-point steps, and the overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. For a two-year transition, ETS also reports a comparable 0–120 overall score on score reports through January 2028, and some institutions may still state their requirements on the older 0–120 scale. MOCC does not guarantee any score.

Which English Test Should You Take: TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo?

Different universities, employers and immigration authorities accept different English-proficiency tests — and not every institution accepts every test. Before choosing, check the specific English-test requirement listed by the institution or programme you are applying to. MOCC offers preparation support across TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test, so once you know which test you need, MOCC can help you prepare for it.
