What MOCC's IELTS Preparation Covers
IELTS tests four skills -- Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing -- across either the Academic or General Training format. MOCC's preparation is organised around all four:
IELTS Academic vs General Training
Grammar & Vocabulary
Accurate grammar and a wider vocabulary range affect scoring across all four skills, not just Writing and Speaking. MOCC's sessions include focused grammar correction and topic-based vocabulary building relevant to common IELTS themes.
Mock Tests
Timed practice under real test conditions is the most reliable way to gauge readiness. MOCC runs mock Listening, Reading and Writing sessions, with feedback on Speaking practice, so you know where you stand before test day.
IELTS Test Format at a Glance
The IELTS Academic test takes 2 hours 45 minutes in total across the four skills. These timings come from the official IELTS website (ielts.org, checked 27 October 2026); confirm any change with the British Council or IDP when you book.
| Skill | Official time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | About 30 minutes | Conversations, monologues and academic discussions |
| Reading | 60 minutes | 40 questions; the Academic paper has 3 sections |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Task 1 and Task 2 |
| Speaking | 11 to 14 minutes | Parts 1, 2 and 3 with an examiner |
Academic and General Training differ in the Reading and Writing content. Use the sections below to plan your preparation, then try a free demo session or read the admissions FAQ.
Understanding Band Scores
IELTS scores each of the four skills on a 0-9 band scale, in whole and half bands, with the overall band score calculated as the average of the four skills rounded to the nearest half band (source: IELTS official scoring guide at ielts.org, checked 22 October 2026). MOCC's mock tests and structured feedback are built to help you see where you currently stand and which skills need the most work. MOCC does not guarantee any specific band score or outcome.

Preparing for IELTS Alongside CSS, PMS or PPSC English
Many MOCC students sit a Pakistani commission exam and also need an IELTS score, so it helps to know what carries over and what does not. Reading widely, planning an argument before writing, and reviewing your own grammar errors improve both. Format knowledge does not carry over: a CSS essay is marked by commission examiners, while IELTS Writing is scored against the official band descriptors for task response, coherence, vocabulary and grammar. Treat them as two separate formats that share one set of habits.
Use your essay skills for Task 2. The planning discipline in the English Essay guide and the Essay Centre helps you build a clear position, supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. But keep an IELTS Task 2 direct and within the word limit, without the long historical introductions a CSS essay can carry. Use precis for Reading. Summarising a passage into its main point, as practised in the Precis guide, speeds up skimming and finding the writer’s view. Use the English hub for fundamentals. Grammar and vocabulary habits for all exams are on the English Preparation Guide.
If you are also considering PTE, TOEFL or the Duolingo English Test, compare formats on the PTE, TOEFL and Duolingo pages before choosing, because the required test is set by the institution or immigration body you are applying to. Check its requirements first. MOCC does not set or guarantee any score. To plan IELTS together with a CSS, PMS or PPSC programme, message the team on WhatsApp.
